A free-standing Starbucks is being constructed near the New Bern Mall fronting on Highway 17. Alderman Jeffrey Odham posted, "I'm excited to announce that a free-standing Starbucks will be built on the lot next to the new Mattress Firm in front of the New Bern Mall."
"We're really excited about Starbucks because they stopped building free-standing stores. That's a very positive sign for our economy," said Jeff Ruggieri, director of the city's Development Services department.
The first Starbucks opening in 1971 in Seattle's Pike Place Market. The company has grown to be the largest coffeehouse company in the world with more than 21,000 stores in 63 countries, more than 12,000 of them in the United States. New Bern currently has two Starbucks outlets that are located inside other retailers.
Coles Doyle, marketing director of Hull Property Group, LLC, owner of the New Bern Mall, said "We have worked hard to attract strong retailers to New Bern Mall that will draw shoppers and diners from New Bern and the surrounding areas. We are gaining momentum as more and more retailers recognize the potential of this establilshed shopping destination, and we are excited for the future of the Mall."
